About remas
The purpose of the remas project was to investigate whether industrial sites that have implemented a robust environmental management system (EMS) have improved their environmental performance.
remas explored whether the European Community Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and other established EMS's lead to:
- improved environmental performance
- improved regulatory compliance
Implementing an EMS should improve a company's environmental performance, but prior to the remas project there has been little data to back this up.
remas commenced on 1 November 2002. remas collected data from European sites until October 2005, Sites can still complete the questionnaire and benchmark themselves against others by accessing the survey here [link]
remas sought data from sites with formal, informal and no EMS. remas used this information to demonstrate ways of avoiding duplication from the overlap of regulatory process work and EMS implementation.
remas shares their findings and understanding with key EU regulators and policy makers to help enhance environmental management practice.
The Environment Agency for England and Wales led remas, working with partner including the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Ireland's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).
Remas is co-funded by LIFE Environment and various project partners. LIFE Environment is an EU body that supports environmental demonstration projects.
